Mayreau, Saline Bay, Grenadines

12 January, 2018: Leaving Bequia we sailed as far as Tobago Cays only to find we had already overshot RAFTKIN and PELIZENO, anchored on the nearby island of Mayreau, so we double-backed on ourselves, passing by the kitesurfers at Saltwhistle Bay to the quieter Saline Bay.  By now you will be familiar with the name of Australian RAFTKIN, Tracy and Dave, with their daughters Hayley and Megan, dearest friends of Isabelle’s, taking Catherine under their wing too. We met New Zealand boat PELIZENO in the Canaries through ARC but hadn't seen them since them. Catherine had clicked with Lisa and Pete's 7 year old son Zenon from day one. So much so that on the crossing over she had thought long and hard about how to choose between Zenon and her friend from nursery days, Jackson, now living in Canada. I pointed out it really wasn’t necessary to choose between them! But really, it is oh so sweet to see these friendships blossoming. As he saw our boat arrive, Zenon nipped into his kayak and was paddling over while Catherine perched on the bow. It was uncannily reminiscent of the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, but soft…

Saline Bay is a pretty bay. Not many boats, a nice anchorage for swimming. RAFTKIN came over on kayaks, Zenon already here, Lisa popped over on the SUP, and while all the kids got stuck into the Game of Life and a plan was hatched for an impromptu supper at ours that evening. Having cleared the shelf of tins of pulled pork in our last supermarket sweep in St Lucia, we decided on that in tacos with all sorts of salads and fillings. Ah, it was great to be reunited, and lovely to meet Pete’s nephew, 18 year old Jono, an awesome big brother to Zenon and in Tobago Cays a bit of a life saver when my Juliet to Xav’s Romeo got tangled up in a Comedy of Errors…
